A new era in clubbing

A NEW era in Chelmsford's nightlife beings next week with the opening of superclub Evoke.

The old Chancellor Hall building has been transformed during a 14 week rebuild and refurbishment costing £2.5 million.

Evoke opens on Wednesday night and is set to wow club-goers with its stunning design, state of the art technology and the line-up of nights that are planned at the Market Road venue.

The team behind Evoke are promising it'll be unlike anything Chelmsford has ever experienced before and want it to be a landmark destination.

But Evoke isn't going to be just a club. It's set to be an entertainment venue with live music and comedy on alternate Thursdays as well as other events and functions on a regular basis.

Things kick off at Evoke with WKD Wednesdays, a regular student night which has its opening party on Wednesday, July 4 featuring a winning mix of edgy and current tunes from DJ Richie Don and Dexta Mitchell, two stalwarts of the Chelmsford and Essex clubbing scene who know how to get a party going.

Friday night (July 6) is the opening night of Pure House which boasts a stellar DJ line-up of Danny Howard (BBC Radio 1), Sonny Wharton (Skint/Whartone), Hoxton Whores and Pique (Pacha Sharm).

Then on Saturday, July 7 it's the opening party of Eutopia which will mix house, garage, r'n'b, hip hop, classics and commerical tunes.

Richie and Dexta, who are promotion managers for the club as well as DJs, know the Essex clubbing scene well and are excited about what Evoke is bringing to Chelmsford.

"We want to make Chelmsford the clubbing capital of Essex, like an Ibiza superclub," said Richie.

"With the demise of Dukes, a lot of people have turned away from Chelmsford, but we want to pull them back here, to offer them something really special," Richie added.

"For me, it's a breath of fresh air," said Dexta. "This is a huge project and it's not just a nightclub, it's an entertainment venue. We want to look after people, to make them feel special and make sure they're entertained.

"We want to lead the way and have people talking about what we're doing at Evoke."

These are certainly exciting times for Chelmsford's nightlife and go! has had a sneak preview of what the new club will look like.

The main room of the club features stylish, curved booths and two long bars either side of the dancefloor but what will no doubt grab all the attention is the 'intelligent lighting' system of more than 400 3D LED light poles on the ceiling. Controlled by computer, this bank of light can be used to create the right ambience for different nights and is set to be a talking point in itself. Indeed, Amnesia in Ibizia is the only other club in the world to have a comparably sophisticated lighting system.

At the far end of the main room is the raised stage area which will have a bank of screens behind and then above that, on the raised DJ platform, will be another bank of screens.

The DJs themselves will have a fantastic view of the club and the crowd, their platform being accessed by two spiral staircases at either side.

At the other end of the hall and facing the DJ area is the Japanese style Kuodo Lounge, an exclusive VIP area on the first floor with its own bar and balcony overlooking the hall. Decked out in Far Eastern decor, the Kuodo Lounge will have a distinctly different feel to the rest of the club.

The Ice Bar below the VIP lounge will have its own identity too, with its own DJs, a bar constructed out of glass 'ice cubes' and the backdrop of a wintry woodland scene.

There's already a huge sense of anticipation around Evoke and Dexta and Richie are sure they can deliver on expectations with the nights they've got planned with big name DJs like Mark Knight, Judge Jules and Ant Brooks booked in for July.

"I think people will see from what we've got planned that we're offering something different to what Chelmsford has already got. We're really excited about what's coming up," said Dexta.
