THRILLED youngsters were able to meet one of their favourite storybook characters, the Gruffalo, and his child, in a nature trail to mark the national launch of a DVD.

Thorndon Country Park and Magic Light Pictures hosted the launch of The Gruffalo's Child on DVD at snowy Thorndon Country Park, on Sunday.

The Gruffalo's Child Trail through the woods allowed children to encounter the characters in the book and get close to nature with fun activities along the way.

The event follows previous Gruffalo experiences created by Essex County Council's country parks education team.

The Gruffalo is a huge, tusked beast with a wart on his nose who falls foul of a clever mouse in the Julia Donaldson story.
