THERE was relief all round at Havering Cricket Club at the weekend when their season finally made a start after having seen the opening two Saturday matches called off because of the wet weather.

The first XI, entertaining Southend & EMT III, saw the visitors win the toss and without surprise considering the conditions Havering were out into bat.

With some movement in the air and off the green wicket, Southend soon asserted some pressure and the home side were in trouble losing three wickets with only 30 runs on the board.

Havering welcomed back Andrew Lazenby and he showed his class alongside Peter Edge with the pair putting on 130 for the fourth wicket giving the home side a decent total.

As the overs ticked by Havering threw caution to the wind and ended their 45 overs on 180-7. Lazenby made 66 and Edge 60 and were by far and away the stars of the show.

Havering started their bowling season in fantastic style with skipper Ben Leworthy removing the opener with the second ball of the innings. But the next eight balls were disastrous.

Andrew Mitchieson and Daniel Beechey bowled fantastically well, both bowling 12 overs straight through, taking four wickets between them.

The opposition innings followed a similar path to Havering and they were 86-4 with 20 overs to go needing 90 odd to win.

Opener Hawkins returned following a strain to his thigh, and Southend continued to march along until Hawkins top edged a Mitcheson bouncer into his nose.

The game was delayed for 30 minutes while the ambulance was called and medical attention sought for the injured batsman.

After Hawkins went to hospital, Havering took control and the skipper returned to take a further three wickets to dismiss the away side for 118, providing a win by 62 runs.
